Exploring whether a racial hierarchy exists in the UK

Where Black British women sit within it.

What is the Purpose of This Study?

The primary aim of this research is to examine whether a racial hierarchy exists within the UK and to
establish the specific positioning of Black British women within that hierarchy.  The study will:

  • Investigate how Afriphobia manifests in everyday life.
  • Explore its impact on individuals’ emotional, psychological, and physical well-being.
  • Understand the strategies of resilience, resistance and coping employed by Black British women.
  • Form the basis for academic discussion and potential policy initiatives that challenge systemic racism.

Hi, I’m Roz—a Black woman of African and Asian heritage, and I have been involved in research projects around abuse and trauma, some of which you can find on this link. I am pursuing an MSc in Social Research Methods – Criminology.

For that I am exploring Afriphobia whether a racial hierarchy exists in the UK—and where Black British women sit within it.

This work centres Afriphobia: anti-Black racism that targets those of African descent. It asks how this shapes our daily lives, sense of self, well-being, and the ways we resist.

This isn’t about how you see yourself—it’s about how society sees you.

What’s Involved In Taking Part

You can choose how to participate:

A one‑to‑one interview (in person or online), with an optional creative photo task

A short, anonymous survey

Take part in whichever way feels right for you—your voice matters in every form.

What is the Photo Task?

This task asks you to choose or create up to three images that reflect your feelings, experiences, or thoughts about Afriphobia and the racial hierarchy in the UK. These images will add a visual element to your interview answers and can be submitted during or emailed after the interview.

For more guidance, download the Photo Guidance Sheet here.
